Darrell Leroy Carlson, 73 of Anchorage, Alaska passed away due to his battle with cancer on June 12, 2023. Darrell was born to parents, Izola and Roy Carlson in Turlock, California on December 1, 1949. Raised in Turlock, Darrell enjoyed racing Quarter Midgets and listening to the Indianapolis 500 Race every Memorial Day with his dad. Darrell attended Turlock High School, graduating with the class of 1968. During high school, his first car was a 1955 Chevy, which he was so proud of. He joined the Civil Air Patrol Auxiliary of the United States Air Force. Cadet Carlson was awarded the Certificate of Achievement in 1967. In November 1968, Darrell Carlson married his high school sweetheart Eileen Adams. The following April 1969, he joined the United States Air Force. After boot camp, he was assigned to Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, Illinois, where he trained as a Fire Protection Specialist. The next assignment was Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska continuing in Fire Protection. Staff Sergeant Carlson enrolled in Project Transition, a six-month period working with the Anchorage Fire Department. In 1974, Darrell graduated as a Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic. In 1986, he trained with the Houston Texas Fire Department on the Hazardous Material Response Team. In 1987 to 1990, he served on the Anchorage Police and Firefighter Retirement Board. Darrell owned and operated Transcare Medical Services, a private non-profit ambulance company for 20 years. He was loving, smart, generous, strong, and funny - in fact, one of the funniest people ever. He was an amazing son, brother, dad, grandpa, teacher, friend, and most of all, an amazing husband and role model. He was loved by all. He is survived by his beautiful wife of 55 years, Eileen Carlson; his son, Tommy Carlson; and his grandchildren, Makeila Osborne & Jake Carlson; his son, Michael Carlson (Megan); his grandchildren, Camille, Grace, and Aiden; his sister, Roylene Bonander (Mike) of Turlock; his brother, Mike Carlson (Trish); and many loving in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends. A graveside service will be held on August 9, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at Turlock Memorial Park. Following the service, a reception will be held at the Shamgochian Residence, 10401 Morro Bay Lane, Turlock, CA 95380. Everyone is welcome to attend.
