John Manuel Silva

John Manuel Silva, a resident of Modesto, California, passed away on May 5, 2025, in Modesto. He was born on April 16, 1957, in Cedros, Faial Island, Azores, Portugal. John moved to the United States and grew up in San Leandro, California. He graduated from Pacific High School and later attended Chabot College in Hayward. On November 11, 1978, he married his beloved wife, Edwina Marie Silva, in San Leandro. Together they built a life filled with love and family, living in San Leandro, Hilmar, and eventually settling in Modesto. He worked for many years as a truck driver for Safeway before retiring in 2012. In his free time, John enjoyed fishing, camping, traveling, attending Portuguese Festas, and cheering on the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland A’s. He cherished time spent with his family above all. A devout Catholic, John was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church in Turlock and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Modesto. He was also an active member of several Portuguese organizations including MPPA Modesto, IPFES Tracy, FDES Monterey, Our Lady of Fatima in Tracy, and Our Lady of Miracles in Gustine. John was preceded in death by his parents Joao and Maria Alice Silva; his in-laws Jose and Maria Angelina Silveira; his daughter-in-law Diane M. Silva; his grandparents Jose and Maria Garcia Da Rosa and Francisco and Ana Da Silva; and godparents Joao and Rosa Pereira. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Edwina Silva of Modesto, CA; children Michelle Metcalf of Beckville, TX; Michael Silva of Tracy, CA; Melissa Mariani (Mikey) of Antioch, CA; and Joseph Silva (Lauren) of Modesto, CA; six grandchildren: Gabriella Silva, Brayden Metcalf, Jaycen Silva, Juliana Silva, Isabela Silva, and Christopher Mariani; godparents Manuel and Manuela Machado; godchildren Ian Garcia, Danny Silveira, Joe Pereira, and Jessica Silva; brothers Chris Silva (Natalie) and Joe Silva (Viba); as well as many extended family members. Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 14, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Turlock Funeral Home, 425 N. Soderquist Rd., Turlock, CA 95380, with a rosary at 6:30 p.m. A visitation will take place on Thursday, May 15 at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Rosary and Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church in Turlock, 2602 S. Walnut Rd., Turlock, CA 95380. Burial will follow at Turlock Memorial Park, 575 N. Soderquist Rd., Turlock, CA 95380.
