Josephine L. Soares, 92, of Turlock, California, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family. Born on November 19, 1933, to Joseph and Francis Machado in Stevenson, California, Josephine was the 12th of 13 children. From an early age, she was known for her independence, strong will, and zest for life. She married the love of her life, Manuel Soares, in 1950 and together they built a beautiful family and a successful dairy business. She was a devoted wife, mother of seven, grandmother to 20, great-grandmother to nearly 40, and recently became a great-great-grandmother. Her life was defined by faith, family, hard work, and service. She taught catechism for more than two decades, served as a 4-H Community Leader, volunteered with Meals on Wheels, and was an active member of the Young Women’s Institute. Josephine also loved to travel—exploring Europe, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, among many other destinations—creating lasting memories with her friends and family along the way. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Manuel Soares, son Larry Soares, and son-in-law Thomas Wallen. She is survived by her six children—Erma Heilman (John), Daniel Soares (Deborah), Walter Soares (Sharon), Dennis Soares (Lorrie), Patsy Bettencourt (Gary), and Nancy Wallen (Thomas)—along with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchild, all of whom brought her immense pride and joy. Josephine’s legacy is one of love, resilience, and celebration. She often said, “Don’t grieve my passing—celebrate my life.” Her family will honor her wishes with a life celebration filled with laughter, stories, and gratitude for the incredible woman she was.
