Mary Jane Tatro Cantrell (Jane) was born August 23, 1944 in Geneva, Nebraska to parents Hazel and Duane Tatro. She passed away November 18, 2018 at Brandel Manor in Turlock, CA. Jane had a very aggressive form of Myelofibrosis/Leukemia. She passed away knowing that God, her parents and brothers were waiting for her. Mary Jane went to school (K-8th grade) at District 3, a one-room school in the country. She graduated from Geneva High School in the class of 1962. She continued her education at Lincoln School of Business. Mary Jane married George Cantrell April 11, 1965 and moved to California after their marriage. Jane and George started their married life in the bay area but soon moved to Turlock, CA, where her brother Robert lived. They had visited a lot of weekend and decided that Turlock was more like Nebraska. People were friendly and there were a lot of farms and dairies in the area. Jane was very adept at shorthand. She always wanted to be like Della Street on the Perry Mason show. She came very close to doing that while working for attorney, Dan O’Connell for 20 years. In 1986, Mary Jane went to work for the City of Hughson. During her time with the city, she was not only the City Clerk, but also acting City Manager. No job was too big or too small for her. She always took great pride in everything she did. She retired from the City in 2008. Jane belonged to the California City Clerks Association, Modesto Garden Club as part of the multi-media group, the Modesto Area Street Rod Association and was a field editor for Taste of Home Magazine. Jane was known as one of the best cooks around. You could always count on her to bring a dessert. Her lemon meringue pie, chocolate chip cookies and homemade toffee were world famous. Jane and George traveled to every state in the U.S. in their motor home, making many good friends along the way. One of their favorite trips was a European cruise aboard a Viking Long Boat. They took both sides of their families on a memorable 50th Anniversary trip to Cabo San Lucas. She leaves behind her husband of 53 years, George; sister-in-law, Alice Tatro-Sukstorf (Gordon) of Geneva and Ronald and Alice’s four daughters, who meant the world to Jane: Leann Dockins (Paul), Laura Gestring (Bob), Allison Jensen (Seth) and Andrea Perrin (Matt); sister-in-law, Betty Tatro of Turlock, niece, Kileen Otis and nephew, Kraig Tatro; sisters-in-law, Carol Jean Goosman and Eileen Perkins (Ron); brothers-in-law, Jim Cantrell (Wanda) and Steve Cantrell (Marcia); and many nieces and nephews. Jane was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Ronald and Robert; and brother-in-law, Chuck Goosman. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at the United Methodist Church in Hughson, 2007 6th St. (the corner of 6th and Fox). Burial will be held at a later date in Geneva, NE. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to your local American Cancer Society. “I want to thank all our family and friends for all their support, phone calls, flowers and cards during this very difficult time.” - George
