December 29, 1927 - January 14, 2022
Clara Mae Bryan "Betty" Westbrook left us at 94 years and 16 days. She was ready to go. Betty was a Southern bell born in TN in 1927. Mom was thrown into the adult world at age 9 after her parents separated and her mom moved away. She took care of her 3 year old sister and 7 year old brother, cooking, cleaning, and helping on the farm. Her dad expected miracles from a 9 year old and she had to grow up fast. They had an outhouse and no running water. Mom was a kind, generous, faithful servant of the Lord. She raised 5 children, and always welcomed our friends. She worked as PTA President, worked in the family business for many years, and then at Safeway for over 20 years before she retired and got a life. She entered MJC and got her AA degree. She loved art and English and was interested in California history and genealogy. After working full time, mom helped our dad with building projects in Paradise, CA. She made many trips with Andy, sometimes taking the bus to or from. She was active in church and tutored children in reading. She was active in the Salvation Army and her Sorority, taking many trips and luncheons with the other ladies. Mom was a child bride, marrying our father who was 13 years older. When Dad passed at age 92, mom found love again at a grief counseling meeting. Mel was a strapping, handsome war hero and the flirting began. They soon married and had several happy years together until Mel passed at age 92. Reading through mom’s journals and the back of many envelopes, there was always a common theme in her writings. Mainly God, her children, her friends, and her grandchildren. She also was a nature lover, always appreciating the color of the leaves changing, beautiful flowers, and cute animals. She was definitely an optimist. Mom’s writings showed her extreme gratitude for everything and prayers for all in need. Betty is survived by her sister, Hazel; children, Byron, Joy, Mark, Kari Ann (Indigo) and Dwight; grandchildren, Christa, Christopher and Jena; and one Great (and he is) grandchild, Wyatt, as well as her loving nieces. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m., on Wednesday, January 26, 2022, at Turlock Funeral Home, 425 N. Soderquist Rd., Turlock.
