May 9, 1927 - July 22, 2021
Delbert Allen Cheney went peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, July 22, 2021, at the age of 94. Delbert is survived by his children Richard D. Cheney, Karen D. McCave (John) and Randall K. Cheney, all of Modesto, CA, and his youngest brother, Jim D. Cheney of Auberry, CA. Delbert was a very devoted grandfather to his five grandsons, Brandon Rupe, Dennis Cheney, Shawn Cheney, Jeremy Rupe and Ryan Cheney, and his 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his devoted and loving wife of nearly 65 years, Linda J. Cheney; his daughter, Donna J. Cheney; two brothers and a sister. Delbert was born in Minden, Missouri to parents, Clifford and Betty Cheney, on May 9, 1927, the first of five children. He worked as an Ironworker for close to 30 years until he was injured on the job and took an early retirement in 1984. He loved the trade and was able to provide for his family so that Linda could be a stay-at-home mom. He was a man of many trades and upon retirement, he started a handyman business to stay busy and earn some travel money for their RV trips all over the country. He stayed busy working for property management companies and of course family and friends. He was always willing and able to “figure it out.” Although he did not graduate from high school, he could calculate a job like a math whiz. Raising his family in the church was a priority for Delbert and Linda and they were faithful members of Airport Assembly of God Church and Calvary Temple for many years, serving as deacon wherever he was needed. His strong integrity, generosity and lighthearted spirit attracted many friends. His love for the Lord was very evident in his walk of life. In his later years, he loved to sing and play the harmonica to mostly the old gospel hymns. He sang often of going to heaven and even led a fellow resident at the care home to the Lord by just living his sweet life. Delbert was a devoted husband and such a great dad, and we are blessed to be called his children. Our desire is to make him proud of the people he had molded us to be. Enough cannot be said about this wonderful man. In his honor, a funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 29, 2021, at Turlock Funeral Home, 425 N. Soderquist Rd., Turlock. Following the funeral, Delbert will be laid to rest at Turlock Memorial Park.
