Hilda Sousa Terra, a resident of Turlock, CA passed away on April 10, 2026 at the age of 75 in Modesto, CA. She was born on June 14, 1950 in São Mateus da Calheta, Terçeira, Açores and moved to Pico in 1959. 10 years later, she immigrated to the United States on November 1, 1969 and became a proud American citizen on November 19, 1975. Hilda cared deeply for others, both in her professional and personal life. She worked as a caregiver at New Bethany Residential Care in Los Banos, CA, and at St. Thomas Retirement Center and Assisted Living in Turlock, CA, retiring in 2019. Her care and compassion touched the lives of many throughout her career. Hilda was a devoted mother and grandmother. She married Manuel Machado Costa in 1970 in São Miguel, Açores, and together they raised a loving family until their divorce in 1984. Despite the challenges, they remained constant and reliable co-parents. Hilda leaves behind a legacy through her children: Manuel N. (Michelle) Costa, Maria M. (Jeremy) Costa Brown, Madalena (George) Costa Lopez, Angela (Joseph) Costa Pugliese, Jose A. (Becky) Costa, John M. (Lona) Costa, Guilherme S. (Elizabeth) Costa, and Edward Terra Silva. She was a proud grandmother to 18 grandchildren: Ryan Manuel, Pierce Alan, Victoria Ellen (Anthony), William Edward, Daniel Alfredo, Adriana Escolástica, Connor Michael, Travis Louis, Joshua David, Kimberly Elaine, Kelly Rhiannon, Jeffrey Logan, Sophia Jane, James Christian, Anneliese Nicole, Amelia Sophia, Andrew William, and Sarah Elizabeth. Hilda is also survived by one great-grandson, Tristan Jeremy. Hilda was very proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchild. Her greatest joy in her final days came from her precious 18 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Her hobbies included crocheting, creating countless doilies and baby blankets. She was also skilled in ceramics, often selling her creations for extra income. An avid gardener, Hilda had a green thumb that could grow anything! Hilda was preceded in death by her parents, Manuel Faustino Terra and Escolástica Vitorina Sousa Terra; her daughter, Filomena Machado Costa; and her great-grandson, Jason Anthony Garza. She is survived by her siblings, Maria Alice Ferreira, Escolastica (Jose Manuel) Monteiro, and Manuel (Maria Liliana) Durval Terra. A visitation will be held on Monday, April 27, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Turlock Funeral Home. A funeral service will take place the following day, Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the same location, with burial to follow at Turlock Memorial Park. Hilda's memory will be cherished by all who knew her, as her life exemplified her belief that "amor com amor se paga" and "grief is the price of love." The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to those who have expressed condolences, provided support, and offered prayers for her repose. These kind words have offered us all tremendous comfort during our time of great sorrow.
